Solar Monitors compatible with 5G network.

2 questions - 1. Does anyone know for sure that Sense is not 5G network compatible and if so 2. What Home and Solar monitor do you recommend that is 5G compatible.

My internet provider AT&T is converting to 5G networks. I have a Sense home and solar monitor and have been told that Sense is not 5G compatible.

But your Wifi will continue to work. 5G is more related to your cell phone.

A solar monitor at a house is going to be able to use Wifi to connect to a home router which in turn is connected to the internet or can be accessed with a smartphone. 5G is a marketing gimmick that will not improve real world performance of smartphones in the slightest. It is a way to use public infrastructure in place of cell towers in urban areas. It is also likely to cause problems with weather forecast stations but the people at AT&T could care less.

Don't forget that Spectrum is now advertising 10G which I think is really hype.to get people to go that way.

The 10G that Spectrum is advertising ia presumably Internet speed over cable and has little to do with WIFI or cellular 5G.

That is what I thought. Thanks for the clarification.

I also agree with Calsun that some of that is marketing hype. There is a eightfold difference between gigabytes and gigabits and none of those "G" terms specified which one it is anyhow.

I contacted Sense company to get a direct reliable answer and here it is:

                Hi Theresa,

                Thank you for your response.

Sense is currently only compatible with the 2.4 Ghz network. As a result, it will not work with either a 5GHz network or a 5G hotspot.

Thank you for your feedback, we absolutely value the opinion of our customers!

We will pass this along to the appropriate parties within the Sense Team.

If you have any further questions or suggestions please let us know!

If you require any additional assistance, please respond to this email.

                Thank you,
                Rinchen

There is a problem with this answer from them because I currently have my Sense Monitor accessing the internet via a 4GHz Hot Spot.

You probably have a 4G LTE hotspot, not a 4Ghz hotspot.

                  Let's start over.

Sense: Uses 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi which uses the 2.4Ghz band.

Old 4G LTE hotspot: Uses 802.11b/g/n (2.4Ghz) since it already worked with Sense and most likely has 802.ac (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz).

New 5G hotspot: Look at the specs. It probably has 802.11b/g/n/ac (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz). The hotspot will navigate to the proper frequency to communicate with your device.

Your new 5G hotspot will work fine with the Sense, but you have to configure the hotspot and/or the Sense device. What I am trying to say is that all modern hotspots will be backwards compatible with 802.11b/g/n equipment.

If you don't know how to manage devices on your router or know basic network device setup, this could be the issue. For example, if you have the old 4G hotspot turned on connected to Sense, then you turn on the new 5G hotspot, Sense will not automatically release its network connection to the 4G Hotspot and connect to the 5G hotspot.

The Sense also uses a phone app and bluetooth for initial setup.

I don't have a Sense, but did look at their online documentation.

You are right what I have is a 4G lte Hot Spot. This is all much too complicated for my brain. For right now it is working and I will leave it like that. I know that AT&T (our provider) is pushing every one to switch to their 5G in this area so that's why I was concerned. I upgraded my phone and now I have a 5G. When the time comes that I have to upgrade the Hot Spot I will start deciding what to do. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge.
