When installing a PV system on a roof one question that often comes up is whether the roof is due for replacement any time soon.
Energy saved is energy you don't have to generate meaning possibly a smaller PV system would be required.
On the Energy Star site there is a Roof Savings Calculator from the DOE that lets you make a comparison between the possible heating/cooling costs using different types of roofs, insulation R values, with or without radiant barrier etc.
It would provide one with an idea of how much may be worth doing.
For example it may be easy to add additional insulation in the roof during renovation. My previous home had no insulation in the roof and the upper floor rooms would be miserable during the hot months. My new home has super roof insulation and the equivalent rooms are comfortable on the hottest days we have.
