Note that ammonia cooling is still used on an industrial scale. It is more efficient than the less toxic refrigerant gasses.

Beg your pardon but ammonia is just about antiquated.If a leak develops, city blocks are evacuated, sirens go off, and people can die on the spot if they breath the gas.

Today's gases if you leak, you do not even call 911 as there is no public safety threat. Only report if you dare to reports is to the EPA so they can fine you and make political hay and money off you claiming you destroyed the Ozone and killed everyone on the planet some day 10,000 years from now,

The people currently building ammonia systems will be surprised to hear that. Maybe in your local area it is not allowed. Here is just one example of an outfit with current projects under "What's New" and "Projects".

My understanding is that ammonia has experienced a resurgence recently because of the since the growing recognition of the long-term effects of halogenated hydrocarbons that began in the 1970s.

Well-designed, modern, systems have many safety features that the antiquated, grand-fathered ones do not and are quite safe by comparison. Not that I think the old systems are that dangerous if operated properly. In the 1970s, I worked in an industrial facility that had one that was probably 20 years old at the time. Facts do not stop the BANNANAs from trying to stop the building of new systems. No one, you see, trusts evil engineers and their logic. New Age logic must rule.

Ammonia, similar to hydrogen and many other fuels and chemicals, can be safe to use by people operating in a controlled environment - such as on an industrial basis. Does anyone need it inside their house or in the backyard? For 99.9% of the population the answer is no.

The 'ultra greens' are not well enough educated in the sciences, engineering and life to understand the difference. They simply find key words they rant and rave about and the public eventually accepts what they are screaming. The leaders of the movement know what they are doing but don't care - 'the ends justify the means' as far as they are concerned.

The 'ultra greens' give the entire well meaning movement a bad name and taste at times. Nothing wrong with being green but there is a lot wrong with being a fool.

This is a similar rap as with nuclear - lots of ranting and raving with virtually no facts involved when the 'ultra greens' start to rant.
