put up or shut up comments are not where I want this forum to go. NAWS did a software downgrade and have nearly killed their board. I'm spending more time moderating now, than socializing and technical content. Who looses, the folks coming here for help.

So messages could be the sort that move things along, or stall us and hold things back. I'm deleting the less helpful ones, or the ones that are picking at scabs of deleted stuff.

I don't like bans or suspensions, because it (forum software) makes me long in manually and painfully to do those tasks.

Dan you came here looking to make trouble and you found it. That pattern is repeated on most Forums you belong to. You are not the only one who knows how to do data mining and find personal information. I know who you are and what you do for a living. The difference is you use personal information to sale to the highest bidder. I do it for free to expose corruption. That is what Chrome does, and you helped write the code for Google. It is all public information, take the credit. It is all printed on your Resume which you have posted for the public to see and head hunters to find. So quit your whining and be proud, and take ownership. Not my fault you have all that printed and all over the internet for the public to see.

Bit of a stretch to throw someone's full name into Google and call it "data mining," Sherlock. Be that as it may, are we now to assume you're stalking Dan? And if so, to what end?

I am not stalking anyone Ian. Dan brought all this upon himself. He has no electrical back ground, contributes nothing to the forum to help people or answer technical questions, and all his threads are polarizing political hot buttons asking for trouble. He got what he asked for. I never mentioned any names, he did that all by himself.

I do not hide or conceal who I am. I am an open book. If Dan wanted to conceal his identity and what he stands for, then don't use your real name and post your personal information all over the web to be found. It is not that hard to figure out. Beside it was brought to my attention who he was, I did not go looking for it. He has a BLOG which is public information. That is what a BLOG is... The mods and admin know who he he is now.

That is all I am going to say.

All a bunch of specious excuses. We all know the attack on Dan was meant to Intimidate him, plain and simple. We'v seen it done to others on here. Offering his personal information for sale makes the point even more egregious.

Nope. I came here to get tips on solar power, and it was useful, I found a good installer for my new house.

After being here for a while, I naturally got involved in threads about the environment and climate,
and tried to provide some objective information. Before long, you started stalking me. It was pretty unnerving.

Oh, really? I make my living helping a videoconferencing startup with automated build and test.
Perhaps you should read my resume more closely. Or not; it doesn't have anything to do with
                  solar power, or this forum.

                    Are personal attacks worth discouraging?

The moderators have a simple question before them: are personal attacks harmful enough to the forum to be worth discouraging?

                    https://www.safaribooksonline.com/li...9839/ch04.html, "Dealing with Poisonous People",
                    puts it well:
"cultures tend to be self-selecting. Nice people tend to be attracted to existing nice communities.... Self-selection can easily work in the other direction as well. When a team is started by a group of angry jerks, the effort tends to attract more and more individuals of the same sort."

IMHO it's worth discouraging bad behavior.

Maybe, I'll let his own speak for what he thinks and does and admits below. I don't think anyone in here can point to any name calling and hateful thing I have ever posted.

                          Whew?

It looks like things are settling down. Perhaps the existing TOS is being enforced, which is great.

I'm using the ignore feature to avoid seeing annoying posts, and will do my best to avoid being drawn into pissing matches.

                          Thanks, all!

I think you may see more active editing by Mods and less deletion of posts and entire threads. More work, but maybe a better result.

Wow - missed all the drama.

What I can offer is what worked back in 1989 when things were simpler for all parties involved both user and moderator. Laugh if you will, but see section 1.3.5 of this document: (and also section 10.3.x for case histories of excessively annoying behavior)

Essentially, there were only TWO rules which when violated would subject one to being banned:

                              1) Don't be excessively annoying.

                              and just as importantly:

                              2) Don't be easily annoyed.

As simple as that sounds, it covers a lot of bases. Constantly complaining to a moderator that another user is annoying is well - annoying, and YOU could be the first to go. See the zen-logic? This is only one ironic example - there are many on both points 1 AND 2. It isn't really arbitrary and not everything needs to be spelled out.

It worked well enough, even back in the day, and could work now. We all KNOW what annoying means. I was warned a few times for infractions on *both* counts. Thing is, back in the store-and-forward days, one had a day to a week to cool off. Well that, and rants at even 2400bps dialup backbone at night was costly.

Seriously, as the world moves towards 140 character communications, the ability to read a forum thread not fouled by a poor signal to noise ratio can be invaluable. I think we / I can all chill at times since we are speaking to a worldwide audience, and not just replying to the original op.

I think a simple 2-rule system as defined decades ago could work well in today's world.
