Hello, Tony, in theory, it can be used to power a generator, and we did such experience..But at present, we focus on solar steam boiler, and central air conditioner...
The conversion rate of solar electricity generator is low, abound 13%, but in future, we will improve it..

Hi am interested in solar thermal to electric generation.

I deal in vacuum tube solar water heaters, and have been very impressed in their performance, already my swh is getting up to 85 degrees C, and that is a low pressure type, I have heard that high pressure heat pipe units can get up to 120 degrees C .

I am sure that in the not to distant future some one will invent a way to convert this energy into electricity,

I have spoken about the use of a sterling engine generator, but most feel that is not the way to go.

Maybe a low pressure steam turbine or engine would work ?

Aluminised Mylar sheets are cheap, light, and excellent mirrors (about the same as your average bathroom mirror). There also polycarbonate mirrors that are quite cheap, and can be bent.
You should use something light, because you will have to move the reflector to track the sun. Fresnel lenses in plastic form also exist, and they might be useful in this kind of project to reduce the sensitivity to tracking errors.
Carbon black is cheap and makes a very good coating for the tank, with one of the lowest albedo in the world. You can find it in paints, just make sure it can survive high temperature and is not too shiny, or you can directly apply soot or coal dust.

The tricky thing will be to avoid the heat from going away. Putting your tank inside a larger transparent tank should help reduce convective losses.
If you add an IR filter, it should cut the radiative losses, but at that temperature, they shouldn't be too much anyway.
The biggest gain would be achieved by pumping air out of the space between the tank and the glass container, making it a Dewar. It will be difficult, expensive, and probably not worth it for your project.
