Maybe it is time to move that off grid system to the mountains of Arizona.

As of November 30, 2015 my accounting to date is as follows:

Total Net Investment less Federal tax credits....$17,199.00 (does not include my labor cost)
Total Cash Flow Project to Date including SREC credits of $1,197.83....$7,496.40
Net Profit Project to Date (defined as Total Value of Solar Produced less Production Cost)......$4,151.56
Return on Investment Project to Date....9.26%
Estimated Payback.....6.4 years

If I include the value of my internal labor the estimated payback would be 25.5 years and a negative ROI. If I had to pay someone to build or install my system it would not be viable.

A year and a half ago I installed a 4 KW system, I paid $8,000 for all costs and received $2,400 back at tax time, so I'm $5,600 out of pocket. My average yearly power bills totaled $1,200 before that, but in the first year I over-generated slightly and broke even. So in the first year I didn't spend $1,200 for power that I would have otherwise.

I haven't "saved" anything yet but by the numbers I have under 7 years until I reach the break even point and then I'll be set through 2034 when I'll worry about my contract with the utility expiring. With just over a year elapsed since I purchased my system I've only sent my utility about $250 which is the minimum connection fee for my grid-tie system. I paying $200 more towards my mortgage each month with the "savings".
