    introduction to solar

So is there an introduction to solar?
As being new to this I found out that building own electric solar panels cost more than ready build ones.
Tubes are cheaper for waterheating compared to electricity generating panels.
Questions I still have after reading about solar for 5 days:
Inverters what??? There seems to be on grid and off grid but what does on grid do when you do not want to sell electricity to the grid? And what is a plug and play version? Does it shut off when there is no electricity on the grid? What happens if you do not use the electricity, where does it go to if you have a version like plug and play with no battery?
What is cheaper tubes or flat water panels in a warmer climate?
What is the difference between mono and poly electric cells?
    Angles on roof?
What is needed for each system? Would be handy to know before buying.
Thanks to a lot of help from this forums users I found out that flat water panels last longer and the system with antifreeze use less electricity.
I am sure more questions will come up in future.
Would anyone have a link to a good introduction to solar that answers questions like these?
Thank you to all who teached me so far.
