    Solar Renewable Energy Credits? (SREC's)

    Hi folks,
Does anyone know about SREC's and how to get set up selling them?

I understand some folks think the whole thing is a scam but I don't really care, if I can make solar power, use my own solar power, and get paid for the energy I produce, I'd like to take that to my bank.

I have a 7.56 KW grid tied system up and running and have currently produced almost 3 megawatts of energy. I'm locate in Michigan.

What steps are there to get involved with this? I did a quick google and it seems that SREC's are selling for around $175 per megawatt. My system should produce around 10 x $175 per year.

Sorry but Michigan can sell in the OH market IF you have the right equipment but it is not selling as well as you might like. Take a look at SRECTrade . Com for current OH rated ( hint you will not get your application fee back )

LOL.. $4 per megawatt? $36 per year? Kind of a joke.

What kind of future are we expecting? More of the same or some kind of recovery?

The market will go away. Its a SCAM invented by Al Bore. The scam is this; the Broker is the only one making money. Guess who is the largest Broker is?

I live in IN and have been selling SREC's into both the OH and IL markets since August 2014.

I have sold 83 credits for $1,766 for an average of $21.28 each to date. Yes, the price is down to only $4 each now in the OH market. I was lucky enough to have sold forward by contract into the IL market in 2016 before the market tanked.

It appears the market will collapse in the Midwest.

I'm not sure I would call SRECs a scam, but certainly your mileage may vary. In many states that offer them, they do in fact have little or no value. But with certain exceptions, DC, Mass, NJ, SREC's still command a decent value.

SRECs are essentially a "Cap and Trade" esque scenario. BUT, their value (if any) is entirely dependent on demand. And demand only exists if your local state (or states you're allowed to trade with) have passed legislation which requires energy generators to produce a certain percentage of renewable energy each year. And, as they do, that the legislation keeps up with supply or else there will be a glut and SREC prices will drop (as we're starting to see in NJ).

In NJ we're currently getting about $200 per SREC. But in years past it's been much higher (rarely) and lower (often). So once again YMMV. If Ohio is the only place you can sell, than likely it won't be worth the effort for you. In neighboring PA, while they have SREC's, the lack legislation to create demand. As a result their value in only $11.

In terms of process, you'll need a revenue grade meter to record the generation (I have a second meter dedicated to this) and you'll need to go through whatever paperwork / registration process your state requires. Then you'll have to report and record your generation periodically (I do so monthly).

Most folks here on this board will recommend that you do not consider potential SREC value when planning your break even / return on investment for your solar PV system as the value of SREC's (assuming you live in a state that has them) is highly variable and could be revoked by the states political machinery at any time.

I live in NJ and work in PA and it is amazing how many fewer solar installs there are in PA as a result. My mother-in-law (PA) was interested in getting a system after I got mine. But financially it didn't make sense because the little she would ave on her electric bill wasn't worth it. Thanks to fracking (though I'm certainly not a fan) our energy prices here have gotten cheaper every year for the past 10 yrs. My POCO generation cost is now only 7 cents per kWH (fixed contract for 3yrs, 24x7x365 usage) plus another 5-6 cents in distribution. So even though I use a lot of power, it's hard to make the financials work out over a reasonable period of time without SRECs in my opinion unless you live in a high energy cost state like CA, etc.
