    Solar Power for Small Fan

    I'm planning to install a composting toilet in my vacation home that has no electricity. This toilet has a small fan which runs continuously. The specs are from the manufacturer are:

    12v, 2.5w/210mA
    Power Consumption: 0.06 kWh/24hrs.

    Obviously, not a high-power user, but I do want it to run 24/7. Could anyone suggest the size panel and battery I should use?

      There are many different designs of "composting toilets". Our unit does not require a fan.

      In my observation; designs that suggest you to separate urine from solid waste do not need a fan. Whereas designs that are for combined liquid/solid waste may suggest a fan, due to the increase urea fumes. Another idea is to increase sawdust to absorb the liquid, so you never have standing liquid in the unit.

      If this is for a vacation camp. You are not going to be in it fulltime, if you empty the bucket each time before you leave then you do not have to worry about it when you are away from it.

          A fan is a fix for a poor design. Providing power for that fan, even on weekends will be a pain,
          2.5w x 24 hrs = 60Wh per day.
          A 100w panel, should manage it ok while you are there. Maybe get an electronic timer to allow it to run 5 hours (daylight) per day while you are gone ?

              It seems to be the best one for our home. The fan must run all the time, but only when we are there.

                  Simple solar solution. Install toilet on a south wall, run vent pvc pipe outside and up the wall towards the roof, paint pvc black, done.

                      I received a reply from the Separett Company:

                      "On an average car battery (70ampere) the Villa 9010 can run continuously for about 14 days. A smaller battery, around 12ampere, should be sufficient combined with a smaller solar panel (10-15W).

                      Specifications fan:
                      Voltage/Wattage 12DC/2.5W/210mA"

                      What size solar panel would keep a 12amp battery charged?

                          As a REALLY rough approximation, orientation and shading not addressed, you can get 1 kWh in a year from 1 W of panel. Your .06 kWh/day is about 20 kWh/year, so ROUGHLY 20 watts of panel. Your issue will be the situation of 2 weeks of shade/snow ... what happens.
