Weird residual current when system says it’s balancing to zero export

I have a newly installed 5kw sdomestic solar system with 10 kWh battery. The kit is Solaredge. It is setup in the mode which is supposed to minimise export by dumping excess production above house load into the battery, or drawing from battery to meet house load if there isn’t enough production.

However, when in this mode, although the Solaredge metering shows zero import/export as expected, a clamp meter shows 2 amps of current flowing at the house meter. My meter is dumb so can’t measure export but shows RED (reverse energy detected) in this condition. Both my installer and Solaredge have confirmed this. In addition, Solaredge ca see this current on their clamp meter which is used to balance the system, However, at the same time this meter is showing zero power.

Solaredge have told me that the current is just reactive power and not exporting active power to the grid. However, this implies that their inverter is generating this reactive power and that the power factor at the house meter is zero.

I find this hard to believe. Why would their inverter generate reactive power, and why would it be perfectly balanced to give zero real power at the house meter? Anyone seen anything like this?

You may find it hard to believe but it's true. Grid-tied PV systems do generate reactive power and they are often required by POCO's to do so to provide grid voltage support. Residential meters only count usage of real power so that's what you are seeing.
