The Sunny Boy Storage device works with the Tesla Battery.

So what does the "Sunny Boy Storage + Tesla AC Battery" combo do, that the Tesla AC Battery cannot do by itself?

Not directly, and it isn't clear that it communicates with the inverter to throttle PV generation when the battery is full, for example, or that it is capable of functioning as a back-up power source when the grid is down, without the Sunny Island. In other words, it looks like it is built exclusively for load shifting / peak shaving.

I think the Tesla compatibility refers to the DC powerwall, not the AC (which has its own inverter built in).

It requires a grid or grid-like source. You'd probably not want to discharge it at night, but during whatever Peak pricing period is defined in a TOU plan, usually afternoon or evening.

Correct - the Wiring Diagram in the PDF that I posted shows an AC Grid.

If you have Sunny Boy + PV Panels wouldn't the Loads be running off the PV Array and charging the Sunny Storage during the day?
Then discharge the Sunny Storage at or after sunset = "night".

Specific to SDG&E...

Historically, "Peak" meant 11 am - 6 pm.
Let's say PV is net generating (poco meter spinning backward) until 4 pm, at which point the sun is getting low enough that PV alone can't cover the load.
At that point, the battery starts discharging, trying to bridge until 6 pm so that no energy needs to be drawn from the grid until the Peak pricing period has passed.
Battery recharges at night when energy is cheap, or perhaps in the morning before 11 am if required to be charged by PV to be eligible for incentives.

After Dec 1, "Peak" means 4pm - 9pm.
PV still net generates until 4 pm.
Battery kicks in at 4 pm, try to bridge until 9 pm to avoid peak pricing.
Battery recharges at night when energy is cheap, or perhaps during the day before 4 pm if required to be charged by PV to be eligible for incentives.


If the tariff has demand pricing, another use case is to smooth out demand surges from the grid (by providing some power from the battery) to keep the peak demand for the billing period lower. Demand can have a peak component (highest surge during peak hours) and a non-coincident component (highest surge at any time). If reducing non-coincident demand is the most effective way to lower the bill, the battery discharge time would be dictated by that.

A lot of POCO's do not have "peak pricing" based on their reported tariff structure. Some just charge more if you use more and others may charge less if you use more.

It really comes down to what your POCO's can get approval on how they can charge you based on a number of variables like; "the time of day", "peak", level of usage, demand, Summer/Winter rates, to name a few.

People with TOD or "peak time" tariffs will probably benefit more using some type of energy storage device to reduce their consumption. But since those type of tariffs are not the same across the US, financial justifying a battery system becomes next to impossible

With reclaimed electric car batteries around $100/kwh, one could Probably DIY a nice HV DC battery with bms )(around $1600) and hook it up to this 5.0kw $2400 storage device for $4000 total price vs these 10kw tesla or LG home battery power walls that are $10K. I wonder how many years it takes to get a return on investment. I bet Hawaii is a great place for this product since I've read the utility does not allow net metering and the cost of electricity is like 35cents/kwh.

Or if the peak rate is really high.

Unfortunately I do not live in HI or CA, 2 places this is probably most economically feasible.

Without really looking at that link I would think that if there is a grid tie system which includes a battery then the inverter is a hybrid which will continue to charge the battery if the grid is not available

But your power will come from either or both the battery and panels until the sun goes down and the battery drains.

There are many HYBRID type of PV Inverters that work when the power grid is down. SMA Sunny Boy, Solar Edge, and Tesla Power, etc ...
