Charging off grid batteries

Could you use a regulated supply (40V 50A in my case) fed from generator and connected in parallell with panels (with a selector switch)for charging batteries. No need to by a 220V charger,let the panels’ charge controller do the job. ? The settings for the batteries would be right to begin with.
