    SolarEdge Comm Wifi DIY?

I have a SE6000A - US that was installed in the middle of 2017. Being totally naiive, I never knew nor was offered an option to communicate with the inverter. Never knew about apanel monitoring via solaredge app, nothing at all until recently. I reached out to my original installer and asked whether this was an installation oversight or not and how much to add on/upgrade a communication feature. Installer told me the technology wasn't in place in 2017 for monitoring (I'm skeptical of this) and that to have the feature added on now would cost me at least $900 for labor and parts.

Anyway, I started doing some research and opened up my inverter just to see the layout. Interestingly, I see what I think is a SIM as well as a LAN port. Now I'm thinking the installer is BSing me. Anyway, I don't have an easy to assess LAN connection to pull through the house so started to explore wifi option. I came across ENET-HBNP-01 and ENET-HBRP-01. Is that what I'd need to be able to access my system with the app going forward? Does it just go in the red square in the picture?

How do I figure out if my system is "setapp" ready?

No real expert on this, but my previous house had a SE7600, installed 2015 and it had a LAN port and was connected to my router for reporting info to SE of which I could view from my SE account on their web site. That old system had an LCD display and I could display status and one of the items was status of LAN connection. I don't know if it was setapp capable. My installer had to configure the inverter to report to SE.

My current system is setapp capable and via the toggle switch on the unit, I can turn on the built-in wifi and then connect with my phone's netapp. I only have access to view some config settings and status, whereas my install has access to config the system. Again, the installer configured the invert to report to SE, and I use the app on phone, or website to monitor my site through the account that was set up.

I'd suggest searching for the install doc for you model, and see if it has setapp support, or how it is managed. It should show how to setup for reporting back to SE. There should be several ways to connect up.

I too would be skeptical about what the installer is saying, but check the documentation to see what is needed. Maybe you can connect the LAN to an access point that connects to your wi-fi, or other some other option for monitoring. The bad thing is that you'll likely have to get your installer to do the configuration, as they will have account access for your inverter.

I've heard of some people talking to SE and being setup as the installer for their own system, so that they have full admin access. However, that totally takes the installer out of the loop and they are on their own, when dealing with SE. Not sure what happens with warranty work at that point.

Just find installation manual for your inverter and check how to create internet connection and register system at SE. There is a possibility that inverter has built-in wired option only and needs some additional module for WiFi connectivity. If cost optimization is a primary objective you can use WiFi clients that bridge WiFi to wired connection. I am sure it will be a fraction of $900 that was quoted.
