Hi,

I need a device to turn on my battery charging power supply automatically when the voltage of my battery falls below 12 V, and then keep the power supply on for about 5 hours or a programmable amount of time or battery voltage (13,2 V for example). The power supply is connected to the mains and the battery is a 12 V one. Do you know if something like this exist? Thank you in advance.

Currently I turn on and off the power supply manually based on the voltage of the battery and I want to automate this task.

I do not know of anything that can be purchased off the shelf but I would say that you are looking for some type of PLC controller with input/output control that can track the battery voltage and automatically transfer the power connections.

I understand. I spent years writing and trouble shooting Allen Bradley PLC control logic while I was working. It comes naturally to me but can be expensive depending on what hardware you want to get and put together.

There are voltage relays that can be set to turn on at 12V and off at 14.2V or higher. It often doesn't take lone to charge up to that voltage without without fully charging the battery. Always use one with a delay timer of several minutes to prevent short cycling.

Maybe not what you are after but I use a simple 15A outlet timer so that it only powers up my battery charger for 6 hours per day max. If the battery needs a charge, it does so and if not it will just go to float for 6 hours. I chose 6 hours as that is always enough time to replace what energy I may have used the previous day. This is on a deep cycle battery for a hydraulic vehicle lift that only is used a few times a week so I don't need the charger powered 24 hours per day.
