Newby question - do I need a controller for 1.5W panel w 9Ah12V SLA battery?

A Thunderbolt very small 1.5W panel from Harbor Frieght was given to me. I disabled the blue led which robs power. I've read and calculated the panel is too underpowered to really maintain an auto battery but I have a 9Ah 12 Volt battery I use to power small ventilation fans. Do I need to worry about overcharging this battery with such a small panel? I am aware of the danger of the panel sucking the charge at night and will either just disconnect it or put in an appropriate schlotky diode but I don't know if this panel can be a danger to this size battery.

    Thanks for your time.

Hello zoom and welcome to Solar Panel Talk

Not using a charge controller usually can result in over charging a battery. But as you indicate that 1.5 watt barely sends out any charging amps and should never overcharge a 12V battery. Yet a 9Ah is pretty small so I would keep an eye on it to see that it does not get overcharged and ruined.

My chicken coop is powered by a 12v 7ah battery with a 5 watt panel. It will over-charge it during the long summer days but doesn't provide enough juice from November to around March.
