I was gifted 4 30v 240 watt panels and a 30 amp mppt charge controller. Was wanting an off grid system for cabin. After doing some research at 12v batteries it looks like my controller is only rated for 400w. So I would assume that I could only use one 240w panel with this controller ?

Can't find it online. The max. voltage rating says, likely real.
You should be able to series wire two panels and over panel by 80 watts. Most likely you won't see more than 400 watts from those panels anyway.2 Kw PV Classic 200, Trace SW 4024 460ah,Comment
