Mounting question

I'm building an aluminum angle iron frame for it. It'll be going on top of a fiberglass shell of a roof top tent, that is mounted on an off-road trailer.

My question is, is it okay to drill though the sides of the frame on the panel? Or can I only use the bottom of their frame? I can take a pic. if you don't know what I mean.

If you're drilling through metal, shouldn't be a problem - you just don't want to do any damage to the cells or the glass/plastic that are above/below them sealing out moisture and the environment. And that means keeping any bolt heads away from the back sides of the solar cells too - it sounds like this is going to be used offroad - so lots of wiggling/jiggling that could make a bolt that's against something wear through it. A lot of movement potentially will cause your holes to get larger due to wear and tear too.

Yes, a lot of jiggling. I've built an aluminum angle iron frame and I wanted to put some 3/16' dia. pop-rivets every 6' around the outside into their frame.

Legally unless the manufacturer specifically allows drilling holes in the frames, it is not allowed and would void the UL (or equivalent) rating. Any warranty could be null and void if you do elect to drill holes. Panels are rated for snow and wind loading and the loading is dependent on where they are supported. The existing holes have been factored in on these load ratings while the holes you drill are not.

That said I have drilled holes in frames on used panels on occasion and have not had any issues.

For vibration mitigation I would get a tube of 3M 5200 and apply it between mechanical connections and of course at any roof penetrations. This stuff is so good you could remove all bolts and it'll hold the whole structure together by itself.
