Until recently, Nova Scotia was like other jurisdictions with net metering, with lots of paperwork for applications and permits. Earlier this year, in response to the main utility (NSPower) requesting a monthly grid access fee of $8/kW DC, the government amended the Electricity Act prohibiting grid access fees and giving every customer the right to install renewable energy systems with a capacity up to 27kW.
The Act specifies a date of July 1st for all meters to be updated to bi-directional, but on June 22 NSPower applied for an extension, which was granted.
Now there is no more net metering applications to be filed. Plans still need to be submitted (SLD, site plan, etc), and permit fees of $290.95 have to be paid. Previously customer meters were only updated after final inspection. Now meters are updated after a permit is issued (before the rough-in inspection). Eventually all meters are supposed to be updated, even for customers that aren't yet installing a renewable energy system.
The meters being used are the Itron OpenWay Riva. I'd upload a photo, but I keep getting "Error uploading image".
