Where is Battery Technology at?

When in the future will we see improved battery technology? Instead of lots of big, expensive, deep cycle batteries backing up power, it would be nice to see just one smaller size battery. I would imagine this would trigger a huge increase in EV (electric vehicles) as well.

If solar panel prices drop to $1-2 a watt, the efficiency increases, and a small battery can store all the energy it would be a different world.

Lacy, Sometimes you do not need batteries. Batteries are only for storeage. Capacitors are the same. There are many times storage of DC electric power is not needed. Batteries are great for handling spikes from motors. If you have no motors. Why have batteries. Not everyone uses electric power after sun down. I have installed and developed many products that are only used during peak periods in the daylight hours.
