For just about everywhere an off grid solar system will end up costing more to generate each kWh then if you purchased those kWh from the grid. The reason is the cost of the battery system and charge controller which adds a lot to the initial installation and will have continued expense of replacing the batteries every 5 years.

If you install off grid solar panels on your home and use them for a battery based off-grid system, then you will spend more than you would have otherwise spent on power bills. Hawaii is a POSSIBLE exception, but that is based on things like what you assume power prices will do.
If you install off grid solar panels on your home and use them for a grid tie system, then payback times are on the order of 5-20 years, again depending on details of financing, future energy rates and incentives.

No not really. Here on the Main Land the equipment cost are 1/2 to 1/3 that of the Islands. Yeah power cost twice as much, but the equipment cost 2 to 3 times as much. So it is a wash. The only gain in Hawaii is longer Sun Hours which has nothing to do with battery cost.
