Is it possible to Run a dual system, Grid Tie and Battery at the same time

Does any one know if it's possible to run a dual system where you have solar panels wired to both a Grid tie inverter and also to battery's at the same time?
This way if the power went out on the grid all the power would go to the battery's without switches or relays etc. Also when the battery's are fully charged and if there is no problem with the grid, the grid tie inverter could get all the power.

Yes, it's possible (with enough money, nearly anything is possible) but your investment in charge controller(s) and batteries might be better spent on a small backup generator, if you only expect 1 or 2 day outages. If you are in an area that experiences frequent multi-day outages, and you can foresee that the PV panels will survive the events causing the power outages, then a hybrid system can do the job, for a price. (note: In California, all new hybrid system applications have been placed on hold because the lawyers think they can be used to steal $30 worth of electricity)
