I live in the Salt Lake valley (Utah) and have had my solar system for 5 months. I'm keeping a blog of my experiences with solar power. The blog is at http://lifewithsolarpower.blogspot.com
Thanks, Novascotiasolar, for your comment and for visiting my blog. I'm hoping the blog will give visitors a good look at solar power and answer many of the questions people have. This first year is an experiment to see how well the solar system works in the four seasons of the year. I don't know the latitude of my house, but it is around the latitude of Washington, DC. It will be interesting to see how much excess energy-credit I accumulate and how far that credit will take me next winter.
I dont see any blogging regarding improving home efficiency.
Better insulation, LED lights, improved HVAC, Pool Pump, and other goodies might have been a better choice in lowering your bill, or at least knocked down your solar needs.
Improving efficiency first is "Solar 101"
I dont see any mention of the price you paid for your 8.5KW system?
Yeah, what alisobob said! Every story about solar houses should start with energy efficiency and payback times for simple things like LEDs, replacing ancient fridges, and setting computers to sleep on idle.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I've made changes to the blog to clarify why we went solar. The blog was not created to suggest ways that people can reduce their monthly cost of electricity. It was written to document the changes to my particular situation that have resulted from my going solar. Visitors to the blog should realize, of course, that several factors affect the monthly cost of electricity, and the use of solar panels is only one of those factors. They should also realize that a solar system used by them might give different results, due to different weather patterns, house location, and orientation of their house.
