I had full access to a salvage yard and pulled the fan and relay from 4 different cars. Hooked them up one at a time and let them run for 5 minutes and measured the motor temp. I went with the one that had the lowest temp. Wired the relay to a snap switch (on 95F off 85F) and pointed the panel more to the west. It runs from noon tell sunset through the summer.

Those portable air compressors - the little 12v ones that claim 220psi are just geared dc motors.
They will operate with as little as 5v however - at least the one I tested would.
DIY one could be had for 10$, add an rc plane prop and you're blowing hot air with little amperage.
I've hooked one up to a peltier on top of a backup stove, to force air through a vent when stove is running just as those "eco stove fans" work.

I'd love to hear more discussion about using salvage fans with solar panels in your attic. If you can get a fan for $40 and a 80 watt solar panel for $100, that's half the cost of what you would find for a regular 20 watt solar attic fan. The cost savings and extra fan power makes the diy solution so much more attractive to me. I also like the idea of not having to drill a hole in your rough. If you already have a gable vent and can use a remote solar panel, there's no holes that you have to cut, right?
Fan is 80w @ 12v, about 6.7amps
panel is 100w @18v, about 5.6amps
Not exact match but it will still run and pull a lot of air.
That type of fan is a bit noisy though.
Thats a lot of expensive power on your attic.
You could use a smaller version of the fan since it would be running continuously the whole day.
Try searching the salvage yard for cheap DC fans and motors.Leave a comment:

Automotive radiator cooling fans pull 10 - 20 amps @ 12V. Way too much for household attic use. There are special purpose, low power fans for that.Leave a comment:

I have not done exact measurements on the radiator fan im using. But since im supplying it power from a 15 Vmp, 3.5 amp panel, its working same as when it is on the car. Roughly 50 watts I guess. Fan is from a 96 civic, about 12 inches in dia. If there is a cloud or the sun is low, it would just slow down a bit, but not stop.Leave a comment:

$535.00 for an attic fan!!!!!!
I am living San fernando valley,CA and My 180w attic fan run 8hr a day in hot summer = 1.4KWH X 180day/year =252kwh/year x 14cent/kw = $ 35.28/year x 15 years,16 day = $535.00.Man!! not a good idea to go for solar.Leave a comment:
