250 watt solar panel to 12 ..150 amp

hi .experts plz

i have a 250 watt solar panel, 51 volt ,8 amp,

i want to charge a 12 volt ,150 amp/h battery from this panel,


so,,what u think about this,,,the solar panel volt is 51 ..and battery is 12 volt..

i think it will damage the battery,,

You probably have a 80 cell panel, so you need about a 25 to 30A MPPT charge controller to drop the voltage down to charging levels for a 12V battery.

You must use a MPPT controller when using Grid Tied (High Voltage) panels.

The MPPT Charge Controller will reduce the Voltage to your selected battery bank voltage of 12 volts.

That's what an MPPT charge controller does. If it drops the volts x2, it increases the amps x2.

What Amy said is true for the quality MPPT charge controllers.

There are a number of low cost ones that are fake MPPT type so do not get fooled.

Quality will cost more but will also provide better results.

Suneagle is right. Just because it says MPPT doesn't mean it is.


I just saw the 51v part, adjusted post.

Next step up is the EP Tracer MPPT line up starting under $200. Their latest line up came this year so I haven't heard much on them. More features than the Eco-worthy.

At around $200 you could get away with over paneling a Morningstar 15a. Full feature but what a waste of power.

At around $250 is the American made Rogue 20a MPPT. High quality and full of features bu the company dropped its 30a line and may drop this when they run out.

That's a short list off the top of my head, I am sure there are others.

You may have to adjust because I am at 5280 ft of altitude but my 250w panels put out over 18a with both my Eco-worthy and Morningstar MPPT controllers. I can't wait to see them at 10,000 ft.
