Are you able to use 6 V batteries to make up a 48 V battery bank

Yep or you can use 12, 8, 6, 4, or 2 volt batteries. The trick is to buy the AH capacity needed so you do not have to use parallel batteries. You can make a battery 600 volts using 300 x 2-volt batteries. Example if you needed say a 48 volt 500 AH battery and tried to use 12 volt batteries, there is no such thing as a 12 volt 500 AH battery. If there was would weigh 350 pounds.

That is why you do not use 12 volt batteries and a horrible design. That is why you use lower voltage higher capacity batteries so there is no need to ever parallel batteries. You must be stuck inside a 12 volt toy box and do not know any better.

However you are correct, you can use any voltage you want just like you can look down the muzzle of a gun to see if it is loaded or not, then pull the trigger while looking to make sure.
