24v battery bank charge from generator

Hello, new member here needing some advise on charging battery bank.
I've picked up old mep. 025a 24v 53a dc generator and just checking if any members here know or have used them to charge the battery bank and how.
Question is: is it okay to direct charge the bank or use pwm/mppt controller is the best option to charge the bank.
currently I have 6 / 4v at 1800ah 24v battery bank.

I charge my 24v battery bank with my gas generator before dark if the bank is low. I use a 24v charger that reduces amps as the bank gains charge, so it will not over charge the bank. It's an expensive and inefficient way to charge the bank, and I am currently installing more panels, so I don't have to use the generator for that purpose. My bank totals about 3200 ah with only 800w to charge it.

Make note of your beginning battery voltage, and let the generator charge till the batteries reach their normal Absorb voltage.

You can do it manually with a meter, or use a PWM charge controller with enough capacity to not blow up from 53 amps

Me - I'd do it manually, since you are going to be there monitoring the generator.

I'm thinking of modifying the dc gas generator 4 cylinder motor to ac motor.
It would take about 3hp ac motor to turn the dc generator and enough amperage to charge my bank.
the mep 025a dc voltage puts out 0 to50v @ 53amps.
I would think using pwm controller to void over charging and using generator starter for auto start the ac motor.
any members here have or built dc generator using ac motor?

So, this is a question, because I'm not sure I understand what you want to do.
you want to remove the 4 cyl gas engine and replace it with a AC motor, to spin the DC generator ?

If you have AC power to run a 3hp motor, why not use a AC fed battery charger, and remove 2 lossy mechanical steps from the process ?
And you save the cost of a 60A PWM charge controller. Or am I missing something here ?
