    Sealed Leisure Batteries venting?

    Ok maybe this is going to be a dumb question but I need to ask it, I use Sealed Leisure Batteries and I want to insulate them for the winter months, do I need to vent the storage or not as they are sealed?

    the name "Sealed Leisure Batteries " means nothing. Are they Gel or AGM batteries?

    AGM can withstand being frozen, Gel cannot.

    Fully charged batteries will not freeze till -40F

    Will these be in operation, or in a idle cabin ?

      Huh? Never heard of a Sealed Leisure Battery, nor have you I bet.

      I think you meant Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) which come in 3 flavors
      AGM = Absorbed Glass Mat
      VRLA = Valve Regulated Lead Acid
      Gel = gelled lead acid electrolyte.

      I will not even discuss Gel batteries as they have no useful purpose in RE applications. AGM and VRLA are basically the same thing and are well suited for extreme arctic temperatures but you will pay 3 to 4 times more for them. However a standard Flooded Lead Acid (FLA) is kept charge are good to -40 F and cost 1/3 of the SLA. But there is no reason to insulate any of them.

          Kimba please accept my apology sir. Guess this is just a slight communication problem with us Yanks and Brits. We call common items by different terms.

          OK I looked at your links, and Leisure from what I can ascertain is a marketing term for what we call RV products. Whoed a thunk it?

          They have 2 basic types Flooded Lead Acid (FLA) and Sealed Lead Acid AGM types for starting, deep cycle, and marine. For renewable energy application you want what they call NUMAX AGM LEISURE (CYCLIC) BATTERIES. Steer clear of the others.

            Hi Sunking I thought it was the case, and never took what you said as more than that, but thanks for the apology.

            So it seems I already have the wrong batteries lucky for me your information came at the right time as I was about to upgrade to another two batteries, ok so rethink time I guess.
