    FLA Venting Question

    Looking at putting in a 16 48v battery bank in a new construction off-grid house. I have a utility room in the blueprints for all things solar/battery. Do I need to put the battery bank in a box within that room? Can I put a bathroom type exhaust vent and just vent the whole room? I have tried looking for photo's of people's setups but they seem to be all over the place from CPU fans in PVC pipe through a wall to full commercial enclosures.

    Since it is new construction I have the luxury of building the room to suit the batteries just not sure on what best practice is.

      I built my battery room with a shed roof, and left screened openings at the ceiling joists, not any expectations of any buildup.
      Battery shed is on left, it's mirror twin on the right is the generator shed with a chainlink fence gate as a door. The panels have an inch of snow. Have a plan for your snow buildup to slide somewhere where it won't block the bottom of panels.

          I was intending on keeping them inside so that they can be kept at room temperature. Is that not a valid concern?

              I would prefer to NOT have my batteries/inverter/generator in my home. My house is 200 feet away. If/when something fails, do you want burning components and sulfuric acid sloshing around in your house ? Many areas, building code would prohibit batteries in the building envelope and your homeowners insurance wont like it either.

              Most everybody oversizes the battery bank, so they have full capacity at their expected nominal temps. My bank in a well vented shed, in 9 years, has never gotten below freezing. My jugs of distilled water in there have not frozen either. When in use, lead acid batteries self heat from internal resistance, and you can leverage that to keep the pack warmer, and then configure insulation for summer cooling. Hottest months, I set an air circulation fan going in the battery/inverter shed to move air.

                  Keeping high energy devices, especially storage out of the house, is good insurance.
