Are car mechanical terminal lugs acceptable for hooking up solar batteries if they are sized properly for the wire being used?
Obviously crimped connections would be better but what if any would be the possible drawbacks?

Make sure that you use plenty Anti-Oxidant Joint Compound like Noalox.

Be careful who you take advice from. Automotive mechanical battery connectors are designed to fail and replaced with each battery replacement, and would never pass an electrical inspection. There is no excuse to use them, If you do not have the tooling to terminate cables, just buy properly terminated cables.

Automotive terminals only have to carry 200A for 10 seconds while cranking. RE batteries have 40-90A running for hours at a time, and need to have solid secure connections. A automotive clamp might work till you get a proper one ordered & delivered.
