I found an amazing deal on some "daka 908d precision built". I got one for $120 and I'm doing a trial run on my off grid 12v (small house) system. So far its doing well, but how long will the "good times last"? Has anyone used this big truck/Farm equipment battery before and how long did it last in years? Has anyone have any experience with this in a solar application? If it's not ran below 50% and if recharged daily.
Deka 908d Can it be used?

It is a 12 volt Marine Battery which means it is a Hybrid battery. Would not be my first choice, but it will work, just not likely as long as you are hoping for.
There are basically 3 types of Pb batteries.
SLI aka starting lightning and ignition. A car cranking battery. SLI batteries have spongy like thin plates to maximize surface area to reduce the internal resistance of the baattery so they can deliver high Cranking Amps and will only have a spec of CCA, CA, MCA and HCA all mean Cranking Amps at a specified temperature. They cannot be cycled because those thin plates just dissolve into dust when deep cycled. They are made to deliver very high burst currents, then be recharged quickly. If pressed into cycle service has very short lives of 50 to 200 cycles. Not suitable for solar or daily cycle service.
Deep Cycle batteries have very thick heavy plates that fill the battery jar. They cannot deliver the extremely high cranking amps of a SLI battery because internal resistance is too high. But the thick heavy plates can be deep cycled and will last from 1000 to 3000 cycles. A true Deep cycle battery wil only have a Amp Hour Listing and maybe a RC
Hybrids try to be both SLI and Deep Cycle batteries. Plates are thicker than SLI, but not as thick and heavy as Deep Cycle. Hybrid batteries have a lo tof Marketing names like Marine Deep Cycle, Golf Cart, Leisure, Trolling Motor, Wheel Chair, Floor Machine, Electric Vehicle. Fork Lift and the list goes on. They can deliver cranking amps, not as much as an SLI. They can also be deep cycled but will not last as long as Deep Cycle.
So yes you can use them, but you gave up cycle life doing so. That is why they are less expensive and in the long run wil be more expensive than a true deep cycle. It is a compromise battery.MSEE, PE -
Thank you for responding. I've had it for a couple days now and I really don't like it. Fully charged it only holds 12.4 volts. My 2 thuderbolt 12v 35ah in parallel discharge better than this. He's giving me the option to return or trade (luckily I've found battery refresher). He has some 6v Trogans that need wetting, will they work just as well after refurbishment?
I really appreciate all good adviceComment

You want NEW, DEEP cycle batteries, not truck/farm batteries

Sunking,
I appreciate your detail. I have been using this "simi truck battery" and it seems to have gotten better. Maybe because I did a long charge and that kicked it up...?
mike90250,
Is there a good board for battery comparison? I would like to know about telecom batteries.Comment
