Sadly, 2 problems,
1) the auto fill systems are all acid compatible, their parts often don't hold up to the Alkaline Cells.
2) Cell Sealing - NiFe cells are easily poisoned with atmospheric Co2 and they have a check valve in the vent cap, to prevent atmosphere getting into the electrolyte.
I usually run about 5 or 6 gallons every 2 weeks in summer, when the batteries are charging well. Winter, I seldom hit full charge, and gas off less water. I'm on a cycle where I do about a third of the cells every 2 weeks, so I'm only doing 10 or 15 fills at a time. 40 cells / 20 gallons is too much . The refill-fill lines are half-gallon.
