Too much heat? You can half the heat by simply adding a diode in the ac line,
Be sure the voltage and current parameters of the diode are sufficient.
For more control, most light dimmers will handle the resistive load.
Pay more for an iron tip..clean it regularly with a wet sponge..never file!
