Grid tie w/ option for battery backup

I want to do a 4-8kwh grid tie system for my home with the option to use batteries in the event of a long term outage. I am assuming I need some sort of swtich that I can actuate in the event of the power going down. Has anyone tried this or know what would be needed? I am looking for resources books, drawings, any information.

Forget the batteries and use a generator. Much less expensive, more reliable, and you get to operate everything in your home.

What type of generator? I want to bypass using fossil fuel and use the panels that I already have for energy in case of an emergency where power is down for several weeks.

There is a way, you need to have a huge battery bank if you want to run your house for more than 10 minutes. The non-grid tie inverters, need to use the battery as ripple control, when generating AC from low voltage DC.
Grid tie inverters run off 300 - 600VDC, off grid inverters run 24-48v

Grid tie inverters can be "faked out" by syncing to a inverter-generator. Then when they kick on and dump 3Kw into the generator, it fries the generator. Not what you have in mind.


If you have an EV, you can do some monkey wires and use the solar to charge the EV battery (but be careful not to smoke the $$$ battery) and find an inverter that can be powered from the EV battery pack
