For those not necessarily interested in dealing in the more theoretical areas of solar technology, solar electricity training is likely to consist of the design, installation and repair of solar-based systems to provide electrical generation, heating, and the ability to heat water for use in private and commercial buildings. This training may not need a four year degree, but could, instead consist of a combination of solar electricity training that can last as little as a few weeks, plus hands-on experience gained through working on the job.

In Canada only
In the Province of British Columbia it is illegal for a non-electrician to perform electrical work of any type except Class-1 or Class-2. Gaining the certificate of an electrician requires completion of a 4-year apprenticeship, which includes 10 weeks annual schooling. Similar rules apply to all other Canadian provinces with the exception of Quebec, which has it's own unique rules.
Certificates for installers of Class-1 and class-2 circuits (low energy power circuits and extra-low-voltage (under 30V, under 1000VA) power circuits) are available via completion of courses at most community colleges, through the Safety Authority. These certificates are intended for alarm & entertainment system contractors.
Home-owners may install solar systems in their own homes under a "home-owners" electrical permit, which is minimal cost.
Section 50 of the Canadian Electrical Code is specific to solar photovoltaic systems.
That's the law.
