While researching about solar panels, I hear about companies planning to sell solar panels for $2 a watt. How much truth is there to that?
Are They Still Going To Sell Solar Panels for $2/Watt

Every year, I read articles about breakthroughs that will make panels $2/watt. We won't be paying that type of price as of now, but I'm confident we'll see the price drop gradually, kind of like what we see happening to the price of computers. www.Solarbuzz.com has been tracking retail panel prices for several years now, and you can see that it's a little under $5 a watt, average, now. -

I've spoke to people who work in the solar panel industry, and from what I understand we should be seeing solar panel prices drop to around $3 a watt by the end of 2009. The more they are in demand, the lower the prices drop.
Cann't agree more! It is still impossible to get the panel under $2/watt with UL. But around $3 a watt is more reasonable nowadays.Comment

Thin film or CIG panels can be sold at $2.00 a watt. You may not get that same power in 5 years because of the mylar materials and UV light damage. This has been proven time and time again. UV light destroys mylar materials and heat causes the materials to expand and cold causes the materials to contract. This will weaken the output of thin film solar products.Comment

Hello, everyone. I am a exporter of solar panel in China. I think the retail price of $2 in your market is not possible for good solar panel.Comment

Only printed solar cells will sell for $2.00 or less. Now ask yourself this one question. How can a company sell a solar powered calculator for $1.00 each. Go to a Dollar Store and you will see what I am talking about.Comment

I don't want to sound like a very old man. Back in the early 80s. A solar panel was sold for $18.00 a watt. I do know this as a fact. There are many reasons why solar cost are going down. Quality, workmanship, cheep labor. Some companies get paid by their governments to export products. The longer you wait for the price to go down the longer you produce a carbon footprint.Comment
